Earnings: May 2011

As promised, this is my very first monthly update of what I hope will be many years of wealth creation. Having come into this business after the Google Panda update I am fortunate to not be faced with the same discouragement that so many others have seen this past month due to the drop off in earnings. I honestly was not expecting to make any money at all this month. That is why I am pleased to report that I have earned over $10 in residual (i.e. not upfront pay) income in my first month.

Here is the breakdown of where the money game from:

Google Adsense: $5.94
- Infobarrel: $0.01 (8 articles posted)
- Value Digger Investor Blog: $0.54
-Webanswers: $5.22 (27 answers posted, 3 questions asked)
-Bukisa: $0.09 (5 articles posted)
Chitika: $0.36
- Infobarrel: $0.36 (8 articles posted)
Triond: $0.25 (5 articles posted)
RedGage: $0.31
List My 5: $4.22 (14 lists)
Hubpages: $0.29 (7 hubs created)
Helium: $0.07 (2 articles posted)
Associated Content: $0.15 (6 articles posted)
Squidoo: $0.23 (7 Lenses created)
GRAND TOTAL:: $11.82

So, it is much better than I expected given that I just started this month. Most of these articles and pages have not even had a full month to mature and gain fews. There are a number of other sites that I have registered and either only posted a single article or have not got around to posting yet. I will provide an update on these once I put more articles up.

In the next few days I will highlight some of the specific sites individually to break down the results.

List My 5: A New Money Making Opportunity

From time to time I would like to update my readers on some of the specific ways I have found to make money online. As far as online earning sites go, LM5 is relatively new on the scene. It features a Writers Compensation Program similar to the old system at eHow. In fact, the site was creating specifically to fill the void left when eHow switched over from the WCP model. So far, in less than a month I have earned $4.22 on 14 lists created. Not too bad for minimal effort.

The Power of Squidoo

If you have not heard of Squidoo you are certainly missing out on a great money making opportunity. Squidoo is very similar to Hubpages, but gives you more options for making a unique page (otherwise know as a "lens") and placing Amazon or Ebay inserts. What is more, unlike Hubpages, you can insert virtually any code you like into the page itself. This means endless opportunities for affiliate marketers. You also get a share of the total income earned by Squidoo through revenue sharing which is dependent on the lens rank of your lenses.

I have created five lenses so far. Most of them have not met with much success, but one of them called Mafia Video Games which has already garnered a few sales. If you would like to start creating lenses yourself, check Squidoo out!

I will be giving a more detailed analysis of all of my money making ventures at the end of the month, including total profits!

Effective Time Management: My Take

Time management is perhaps one top five discussed topics for bloggers and content creators online. In my time scanning the forums and other blogs, being able to focus and get work done on a schedule appears to be an essential element of success. It makes sense, right? If you can't produce content then you can't earn!

Everyone has a different opinion on how you remedy the scrouge of procrastination. Some people jot down notes and outline articles, some people set daily goals of articles "pumped" out, and some use timers to track their time. All well and good, but somehow this all turns me off.

I like to have room to breathe and space to think. Churning out articles like it is a marathon reminds me of working on the factory line. I genuinely enjoy writing and expressing myself in addition to earning money. In fact, I find that some of my worst articles are down out of a sense of obligation to some self-imposed time constraint. Most of us online content creators are not yet able to support ourselves on the money we earn. For many, it is a profitable hobby, but not a job replacement. Most of us actually GO to work and have to work the conveyor belt. Why put yourself through this once you get home and are finally free? Self imposed misery, I don't think so! Not for me.

I think an important caveat to this approach is if you are writing for a flat fee, not residual income potential. In this case, churning out articles as fast as yout can (and get away with it) may be your best option. I am not opposed writing articles for a flat rate, indeed I would like to try out some good sites for this, but I am against sapping your creative juices by giving yourself insane deadlines and unrealistic productivity goals. At least for me, writing articles and building websites is FUN as well as profitable. Consider it a profitable diversion. I just don't want to ruin a good thing by turning it into "work".

What do I do?

So you might be asking, okay, so how do you keep yourself organized? Well, this is how I do it. I give myself a "cycle". Usually it is about three days. I then give myself a lengthy list of things I want to accomplish creatively. You do need SOME structure after all. Then I go about accomplishing these tasks however I feel within the given three day time period. I might start an article and work on the outline, then feel my energy sapping, take a break, then move over to building a Squidoo lens or working on creating some backlinks. Not everything has to be accomplished in a linear fashion when you are working for yourself. That is part of the joy of being self employed freelancing! Do it on your own terms. That doesn't mean you take it as an excuse to slack off, but don't turn a good thing into a mindless activity without any creativity or excitement.

Especially if you are otherwise gainfully employed, there is no rush create content and replace an income. be CONSISTENT, but do not overburden yourself. Burning out is potentially more destructive to your long term profits than you think. Sure, you can write 15 articles today and post them on InfoBarrel but you may actually make yourself detest the keyboard and the thought of writing so much that you are forced to take a few days off just to re-charge. If that works for you, then great. But I would venture to guess that taking it slow and STEADY wins the race in terms of quality and even long term quantity.

What do you think? How do you manage your time?

Experimenting with Content Creation, Freelance Writing, etc..

I have already taken my first baby steps creating wealth online. I have read plenty of other blogs about this early stage. There is that initial phase of euphoria after setting up an Adsense account and opening accounts on various content creation for profit sites, but then you write your first piece and the account still clings to $0.00 as if to remind you of how far you still have to go. The key is to not give up hope, so I am told.

In an effort to find the best medium to earn money, I have begun experimenting with a variety of revenue sharing, pay-per view, and pay per word/content sites.

Here is where I have registered so far:

1) Triond
2) InfoBarrel
3) HubPages
4) AssociatedContent
5) Squidoo

This five sites are the only ones I have actively contributed content to as of yet. I particularly am enjoying Squidoo and HubPages. At the end of the month I will let you know where I am in terms of earnings. As it has only been a few days, they are pretty shabby right now. If anyone has positive experiences (or negative) with these sites, let me know.

My goal is 1) to test out which sites are most user friendly and have the best potential for earning revenue, but 2) to keep my earnings sources diversified. As it is, many of the sites referenced above have Google Adsense revenune sharing. I also have a Chitika account which helps diversify revenue and provides an alternative to King Google.

Watch this space! I will start highlighting various aspects of wealth creation process in depth in the next few posts.

Welcome to Goldrush: A Manifesto

Hello and Welcome!

This Blog was started as a way to track, share, and improve my various wealth creation opportunities online. I am not a whiz kid or an internet marketing expert, but I do come with an entrepreneurial mindset, a good work ethic, and a desire to develop profitable sources of income online.

In the early stages of this blog I will be updating you on my progress with various content creation and revenue sharing sites I am experimenting with. I have not found the perfect income source by any means. Rather, I am taking a conservative approach by putting irons in multiple fires. This is a learning experience for me and hopefully for you as well. We are in this together come hell or high water!

I do not rely on earning online for my primary income source by any means, althouth it would be simply fantastic if it could some day turn into just such a source. I am starting from the ground up. As of today I have zero earnings from online sources. At the end of May I will be giving my first overall in depth update of my earnings (if there are any at all). In the meantime, I will try and update this blog numerous times throughout the week as a uncover, test, and plan different methods of earning money online.
